Moffat

Just 30 miles over the England/Scotland border and 1 mile from Junc 15 M74 lies the town of Moffat, the first Dark Sky town in Europe.

Nestled at the foot of the Moffat hills this little town is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty spots nearby, eg. The Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall, Loch Skeen, St Mary’s Loch and the Beef Tub. The town also boasts an amazing selection of eateries, pubs and small independent shops.

Moffat also offers The Classic Car Rally Weekend, Music Festivals (including the nearby Eden Festival), South of Scotland Tennis Tournament, and local festivities.

Are you a Biker?

Join the ever-growing number of bikers who have discovered the pure joy of riding the roads around Moffat.  The legendary route from Moffat to Selkirk and beyond attracts hundreds of Bikers from all corners to ride one of the most scenic routes in Britian.

Are you a Walker?

Fed up with the crowds in the Lake District?  Then walk the local hills and valleys around Moffat.  Some are easy, some are tough?  So much to choose from.

Are you a Cyclist?

We are on the Lands End to John O’Groats Route, if you fancy really stretching your legs and are up for a challenge.  More gentle rides are plentiful if you just want a bit of exercise over your stay.

Are you a Nature Lover?

Be sure to bring your binoculars.  Surrounded by an abundance of glorious countryside and hills, Moffat is home to an amazing array of wildlife.  The local Moffat Nature Reserve and nearby Castle Loch have lots to keep you interested and you might be really lucky to see our Red Squirrels and Deer.

Travelling on Business?

You may not want to stay in a city, Moffat has excellent road links with Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle.  It is within an hour’s drive of all three.  Full of excellent accommodation and eateries, why not spend a restful and much cheaper night in beautiful clean surroundings before travelling on to your business?

Other attractions include:

Houses & Gardens: Craigieburn is only 2 miles out of Moffat, and Dawyck Botanic Garden and Arboratum is about an hour’s drive away as is Dumfries House and Garden.

Did you know the Aviation Museum in Dumfries now has a restored Spitfire on show? Weather permitting, you may also see a fly past with a Spitfire during the annual Lord Dowding Memorial Service in Moffat, early September.
